The deep, lush forests nurtured by Amami Oshima’s abundant rainfall are one of the main reasons the island was recognized as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Combined with the island’s unique geological history, these forests have created biodiversity found nowhere else in the world.
Although most of Amami Oshima is mountainous, safe hiking trails for travelers are limited because of the presence of venomous habu snakes and the island’s rugged terrain-which is also one of the reasons the island’s forests have remained so well preserved.

Meal is NOT included in the tour fee, but we're happy to stop at local cafes or restaurants along the way. If you have any dietary preferences—especially vegetarian options—please let us know at the time of booking so we can prepare accordingly.
Of course, you're also welcome to pick up food at local markets or convenience stores during the tour.
Example of Destinations & Activities
Kinsakubaru Forest (World Natural Heritage Site):
A certified guide is required to enter this protected forest. Actual walking in the forest is about 2 hours.
Note) During the hot summer season (June–September), our Kinsakubaru tours are available only in the early morning for a more comfortable experience (hotel pick-up between 5:00–6:00 AM).
Mt. Yuwandake (World Natural Heritage Site):
Highest peak in the Amami–Okinawa region. Accompaniment by a certified guide is recommended. Depending on the course, the forest walk itself takes either approximately 1 hour or 3 hours round trip. Because of the risk of habu snakes, tours are available only from November to April.

Amami Oshima is one of Japan's premier birdwatching destinations and a dream destination for birders from around the world. More than 300 bird species have been recorded here, including endemic species such as the Lidth's Jay and Ryukyu Robin. We tailor each tour to your target species and the season, guiding you to the best locations for birdwatching on the island.
